Samuel Mungai

sam Born in 1992, Samuel Mungai is the second oldest of three children. He and his siblings were raised by a single mother who took good care of them for most of their childhood. In 1996, Samuel's mother was remarried. Unfortunately, her marriage deteriorated as she started selling alcohol, drinking heavily and fighting with Samuel's stepfather.

After an incident between his mother and stepfather, Samuel was abandoned by his parents and survived on food brought to him by his older sister. Fortunately, his sister had heard about D4K and helped him find his way there to live.

Samuel is now studying at Kinale Highschool in form one, and is doing very well. He enjoys basketball and has proven himself to be a talented player. Samuel is a very open minded and helpful person. His goal is to become a jounalist.

Remember Mike? He has been accepted to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and needs your help!

Michael Nyambura, once a homeless teenager who helped me win the trust of the street children and film their stories, has earned provisional admission to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

I first met Mike next to the slaughterhouse at the Dagoretti Market outside Nairobi in the summer of 2000 after he had been forced to drop out of school and found himself homeless. He worked tirelessly as my translator and guide and submitted to extensive interviews about HIV and life on the streets. Students from Connecticut College helped raise money to send Mike back to school where he later ranked third in his class.

After seeing Left Behind on campus, two students at St. Joe's U. traveled to Nairobi to volunteer helping AIDS orphans and sought out Mike. They encouraged him to apply to college in the United States, and when they returned to campus, helped persuade the university to give him a chance. Mike has been granted provisional acceptance and a scholarship at St. Joe's, and his supporters are raising money for transportation, books and other costs he will face as a student in America.
